A taste of Ye Old English with Timothy Oulton

Are you a fan of the quintessential English style?  The furniture brand Timothy Oulton, which operates two stores in Hong Kong, now gives you the chance to adorn your home with authentic, exquisitely crafted fabrications that evoke a sense of old England.

The brand, which is named after its founder, Timothy Oulton, was founded in the village of Hale near Manchester. Timothy inherited his appreciation for exquisitely produced products and antiques from his father; a military man turned antique dealer who founded a small antique store, called Halo Antiques in 1976 which specialized in handcrafted furniture and decorative accents.

Major Oulton enrolled Timothy and his siblings at Ampleforth College, a Catholic boarding school run by Benedictine monks situated in the village of Ampleforth in North Yorkshire. The school, a historic institution that dates back to 1802 occupies a picturesque setting in a beautiful valley. Timothy’s residence at the antique-laden, lofty halls of the school helped nurture his love for classic British heritage and design.Timothy’s passion for British artisanal products inspired him and his brother Charles to produce a line of furniture that showcased the expertise and artistry of local artisans. This furniture collection morphed into the Halo Group.

Timothy took over the business in 1990. He then proceeded to abandon the antique trade and chose to concentrate on design with an effort to reinterpret antiques to appeal to a wider audience.

Soon Timothy joined hands with Diego, a master leather craftsman hailing from Argentina and the duo set up shop. Today the brand, which is renowned for its handcrafted products created with the finest materials and time-honored techniques operates stores around the world including two in Hong Kong.

Timothy Oulton’s product line currently includes furniture for the home and office along with lighting and lifestyle accents such as rugs, candles, wall art, soft furnishings, and objets d’art. The product line of the brand has in recent times expanded to include handbags and small leather goods along with cashmere winter wear and even a custom production accessories line. The brand also has several signature items such as the Saddle Chair, the Westminster Couch, the Globetrekker desk, the Mayfair Steamer Trunk amongst others. All these products showcase traditional English design features and are inspired by history. Some of these products are crafted out of reclaimed timber sourced from abandoned fishing boats and even old distilleries and mills. The Halo Group in the 1990’s was, in fact, the first furniture company to build a business around products created with repurposed wood long before the idea became trendy.

The Timothy Oulton collection is available at the brand’s stores at Gough Street near Hollywood Road and St Francis Street near the trendy Star Street Precinct.
