Living in South Horizons at Ap Lei Chau

South Horizons

South Horizons Residential Estate is a high-rise residential complex located on a piece of land which was once only a small fishing island located just off Hong Kong harbour. It was originally a farmland with a few village houses scattered along the waterfront and is occupied mostly by fishermen and their families. We now recognise this land as part of the Ap Lei Chau district.

What was once a sleepy village with water access only, this land has been transformed into a modern-day luxury residential tower complex, connected by bridge, with a vibrant and buzzing atmosphere right on the coast. Best viewed by boat you can easily identify this development, with some of the towers being right at the water’s edge, standing tall and proud, with undeniably envious views for its residents.

The Complex

Located at the western end of Ap Lei Chau (a.k.a. Aberdeen Island) on the south side of Hong Kong Island, looking across to Lamma Island and the south China sea, South Horizons has become a haven for families in a conveniently close location which is now recently connected to the MTR network.

This large, multi-building complex completed between 1992 and 1995 has an abundance of facilities and amenities with convenient shopping at street level. There are 4 phases with a total of 34 towers ranging in height from 25 to 42 stories. In total, there are a total of 9813 apartments on site ranging in size from 632 to 1906 sq ft saleable areas. Set at the water's edge, some towers have stunning endless harbour views and others look onto the lush green mountain side or out over the outdoor swimming pools and gardens on site. The newly built MTR station is right opposite the complex, making it very convenient for easy access to the city. There are also many buses connecting the development to many parts of Hong Kong.

Onsite Facilities

The luxury estate of South Horizons has beautifully laid out gardens and was the recipient of a Silver Award for Landscape Design as part of the Best Landscape Award for Private Property Development. There are over 50 plant species cultivated along the development’s nature trail and promenade with information boards placed along the way to identify each plant and tree species. These attract a variety of birds throughout the year.

An 800-metre-long promenade gives you the opportunity to take a scenic walk along the water’s edge with spectacular views of the harbour and out to sea. Don’t miss the sunsets with the windmills of Lamma Island in the background, and the parade of returning fishing boats and luxury yachts heading into the Aberdeen harbor to dock for the day.

The promenade also boasts free outdoor gym facilities and table tennis. There are plenty of play areas for children at the many big and small parks dotted along the promenade with a variety of swings, slides, rockers, see-saws and merry-go-rounds. Early mornings attract Tai Chi groups in the parks while joggers can be seen at all times of the day and evening along the waterfront route.

Other residents’ facilities on site include numerous resort style swimming pools (both indoor and outdoor), plenty of car parking, outdoor playgrounds including both football and basketball courts, golf practice driving range and tennis courts, a large indoor sports complex which includes squash, table tennis, badminton, and snooker. Each phase has their own facilities with parklike landscaped grounds however as a resident you gain access to all of the facilities within the large complex.

Education

South Horizons has a number of kindergartens in the vicinity including the Woodland Harbourside pre-school and Victoria South International. For expat families looking for junior to senior schools there is the International Montessori School, The Grove International Harbour School. You are also close to the Canadian International School, the Singapore International School, and Kellett School on Pok Fu Lam campus.

Marina Square Shopping Mall and Plaza

South Horizons has an enviable location having some of Hong Kong’s best shopping at your fingertips. Marina Square East and West multi-level malls have an incredible variety of shops covering fashion, electronics, sporting goods, specialty stores, supermarkets, grocers, bakeries, service providers, pet shops, hardware, food courts and more. Prada has their outlet store (being one of only two outlets in Asia) located here.

The variety of restaurants cover most nationalities, from casual street type food to high end restaurants. Retail stores selling exotic food ingredients make this a popular destination for chefs and home cooks alike. Tea shops line the streets and arcades, and for entertainment you have a number of cinemas at the MCL Cinemas complex on site.

Being just a short hop to Aberdeen, the area is blessed with both wonderful restaurants and the Aberdeen Marina Club for high end dining, the freshest seafood and superb views and a day out sailing.

Horizon Plaza

A short stroll from South Horizons along the bay’s shorefront will lead you to Horizon Plaza. This converted industrial building has become famous to both residents and international visitors as one of the premium outlet centres in Asia. With over 30 huge floors in the one building, it can take a full day and likely many more just to navigate your way through the maze of shopping bargains on offer. Luxury department stores such as Lane Crawford (which can take a full day alone) and Joyce have their fashion outlet stores in the building along with luxury labels such as Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Marni, Etro, Hugo Boss and many more high-end European designers. Also popular for furniture, homewares and furnishings, vast entire floors are devoted to massive showrooms with everything for the home or office at amazing discounted prices. Fortunately, there are bathrooms on every floor alternating between men's and women’s, a few cafes here and there and a very good top floor casual restaurant with fantastic views out to sea. There are a number of lifts in the building, and it’s definitely recommended to stop at the concierge on the way in to pick up a store directory.
