Luxury Living in Hong Kong

In the Seat of Luxury – Hong Kong

Holding the crown as one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, Hong Kong has a sparkle and shine like no other. While New York, London, Sydney all have their own special magic, Hong Kong continually enthrals visitors and residents alike, every day of the week, every week of the year.  Past residents who’ve since relocated to other parts of the world reminisce about their time here, waxing lyrical about how their Hong Kong days were the best days of their lives.

What are the things that make this city so great? What really is the essence of this city that balances beauty, business, and lifestyle?

Most of Us

That the majority of expats that come here are on work contracts centred in the banking and finance industries, recruitment, food and entertainment businesses and a handful of other pursuits, leads to a spread of nationalities and personality types from all walks of life.

For the locals in Hong Kong, this mix of foreigners gives them access to experience many cultures, culinary diversity and languages without ever having to leave home.

For the majority of people (local and expat), Hong Kong is a place known for its expensive rents, expensive alcohol, and small spaces. Monthly salaries get chewed up on eating out, after work drinks and taking vacations to Thailand.

A Privileged View

For the well-heeled however, Hong Kong is a buffet of all the exciting things that can keep you engaged and entertained. This is living in a luxury mansion or house at the Peak or on the South side beaches, with the most glorious views of the Islands and the China seas. To have six luxurious bedrooms with bathrooms in your luxury home and massive open plan living, dining and entertaining areas, with beautifully manicured gardens surrounding the resort style pool, this is just day to day life of the super-rich in Hong Kong.

Private staff, maids, valets, helpers and drivers are all required as support roles for this prestigious lifestyle. In addition to their elite homes in Hong Kong, their luxury super yachts, Bentleys and private club memberships, allows them to move freely around an otherwise busy and at times choking with traffic “City”.

Luxury designer stores put out queue managing ropes to manage crowds lining up to shop. At Chanel it’s almost impossible to just walk in and browse freely. The wealthy clientele love being pampered and attended to so devotedly. Champagne and Perrier are on free flow.

To take a helicopter to Macau from your luxury estate in 15 minutes at any time of the day or night, (this is an experience that everyone should try out once in their life), for the wealthy to hover above Victoria Harbour at night with the famous neon lights presenting a fairyland of jewels glittering on black velvet is incredible. Next thing you are alighting your ride and being whisked away in a limo to a private room in one of the almost insanely gilded casinos where there is no limit to the luxuries of life that can be provided for your experience.

Invitations to Society Charity Balls where the attention to detail is never too much, with glamorous people dressed in expensive black tie and gowns, mixing with Hollywood stars, writers and visiting dignitaries and paying millions of dollars for a seat at the table.

Small Luxuries Add Up

But for those who aren’t on the Forbes “who’s who” list, the little luxuries we have at our fingertips can make us feel just as good. Hong Kong is the city of foot massages, and in the middle or end of a hectic day, there is a small delight to have your feet bathed and soothingly massaged. Happy hour drink prices and free nibbles can lift our spirits, rubbing shoulders with the beautiful crowd in a city brimming with vibrancy and energy. To have the freedom to move around on Hong Kong Island at all hours of the day and night and feel safe without the thought of being mugged and worse, is a definite privilege we must not forget.

To have access to some of the most amazing Asian countries, within a 1 or 3 hour flight is a luxury. To be able to stay in boutique luxury resorts that are more than affordable is a definite luxury on a long weekend. To get on the lists of your favourite brands and get a “decent show bag” of goodies on exit is a definite Hong Kong treat. To have access to some of the best sailing and hiking trails in existence is a pleasure we can take advantage of. To try different food varieties from the Set Lunch Menu won’t break the bank every day of the week, and our rooftop bars are second to none, to show off to our visiting guests and at the same time, remind ourselves that we are living in one of the world’s best and most admired cities.
