Living in Redhill Peninsula in Tai Tam

Tai Tam is an area on the southern side of Hong Kong Island that sits between Stanley and DÁgualir Peak. The name Tai Tam means big pool in Cantonese, which would aptly describe the location, which has reservoirs and waterways, bays and beaches, and the spectacular Tai Tam country park. Historically the areas around the waterline were the sites of just a few very small fishing villages. However, during the Japanese invasion, there was quite a bit of heavy fighting here due to the reservoirs and dams built from the mid-1800s, which supplied the water to a large section of Hong Kong Island.

Today Tai Tam is the neighbourhood of a number of luxury developments which include the Redhill Peninsula. Redhill is a luxury private residential estate located on the Tai Tam peninsular on the northwest-facing side, wrapping around the hillside on Tai Tam Bay. The complex is a collection of houses and apartments standing out and yet blending into the hillside, surrounded by luscious parkland and overlooking the sea. From a distance, this complex has the look of a Mediterranean village, especially if viewed from the Shek O headlands when the sun hits the pale shaded houses stacked neatly and following the curve of the hillside. With all these factors, there are many luxury homes for sale in the area.

The residences

Set out in four phases which were developed between 1990 and 1992, there are just shy of 500 dwellings. These comprise 200 low-rise townhouses and duplexes to ten high-rise apartment blocks. All have 3 to 4 bedrooms, and the houses and townhouses have either private gardens or rooftop gardens. All apartments have balconies that face either the bay or the parkland.

The architecture and design of the complex have been well thought out to take advantage of the magnificent views and location. Whether house or apartment, light and space have been the priority with open planned living areas and high ceilings. As properties have changed hands, new owners have remodelled or updated to enhance these great features further.

The recreational facilities are some of the best on Hong Kong Island including: a small clubhouse, pool, and tennis court, a separate children's playground in the housing area, or all residents can use the larger clubhouse at the apartment blocks. This has four tennis courts and a spectacular resort-style pool and a fitness gym, squash courts, and a series of entertaining and function rooms.

In the area

The residences and location are very popular with expat families. The complex is situated next to the Hong Kong International Senior School and is close to a supermarket and shops. This is also the neighbourhood of the exclusive American Club with its luxury members facilities. Stanley is a short commute away, with all the dining and seaside options that one could wish for and the renowned Stanley markets. Nearby is the luxury Parkview serviced apartments and Members Club.

The Country Park is nature at its best, a maze of exciting hiking trails, waterfalls, historical monuments, and reservoirs. It’s no wonder that Redhill Peninsular promotes itself as a healthy lifestyle choice with so many activities on the doorstep. Surrounded by so much green vegetation purifying the air, it’s entirely possible to find yourself in a deserted cove or bay, looking out towards Shek O and not believing that you are living in the busy metropolis of Hong Kong Island. Worlds away, and yet only a short commute to Central, the scenery is quite breathtaking.

The reservoirs are a huge attraction for photographers, with many bird species and wildlife thriving in the protected area. There are biking trails, historical monuments from the building of the dams and reservoirs, pump houses and aqueducts, bridges and staffing quarters, and the famous Heritage Trail, a hike which puts you right in the picture with kiosks along the way, highlighting the items of interest to look out for on your exploration. Tai Tam Family Walk is a popular weekend activity for local residents and visitors alike. It’s well worth a full day with a picnic lunch at one of the designated picnic spots along the way. To get to the walk’s starting point, follow Tai Tam Reservoir Road for 15 minutes, starting from Parkview Mansions. With beautifully scenic views as you climb to the hilltop, you will be rewarded for your climb with the most incredible and dazzling panoramic views.
